"I believe that fair and impartial courts, applying the rule of law, are the cornerstone of individual rights and the foundation of the American dream." —Tom Buckel

Meet Tom

Tom Buckel
Tom Buckel is a dedicated public servant with an unwavering belief in our justice system.  A successful lawyer, legislator and community leader in Upstate New York, Buckel will use his experience, sound judgment and strong principles as a Supreme Court Justice to protect individual rights and provide equal justice for all.

Tom has tried to live up to the ideals of his heroes–great New Yorkers like Theodore Roosevelt, Robert Kennedy and Daniel Patrick Moynihan–by serving the most vulnerable people in our region, leading efforts to reform government and standing up to the powerful forces that put their private interests ahead of the community’s interest. As a Member of the Onondaga County Legislature, Tom has fought for quality jobs, stronger schools and ethics reform. As an attorney, Tom has been an advocate to those less fortunate who have been denied a legal voice.  Tom believes that our courts are the most important guardians of opportunity, fair play and justice in our nation.  He is committed to fairness, openness and providing sound judicial decisions.

Tom Buckel was born in Syracuse on July 7, 1956. His Central New York German, Irish and Italian roots go back four generations.  He attended Central New York parochial schools, graduating from Bishop Ludden High School in 1974. Tom graduated with honors from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York in 1978 and The University of Virginia Law School in 1981. He also completed graduate courses at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School. Tom is married to Mary Vossler. They have three children, Elizabeth, Anne and John.
